"I emailed various rental companies and received a resounding NO from Avis and Enterprise, but positive responses from two others.
Hertz (using their online chat facility) confirmed that the insurance would be invalid if we travelled on an unmaintained road, but that a dirt/gravel road that is regularly maintained is fine
Alamo stated:
"Traveling on an unpaved road is not an issue, if damage is not done to the vehicle. I recommend purchasing our Roadside Plus Protection plan if you know for certain you will be traveling on unpaved roads. The coverage will take of flat tires, jumpstart fees, towing, fuel delivery, and key replacement fees. Having this added protection would cover the liability of the tires on your rental, and make unpaved roads would really be even less of an issue. Hopefully this answered some of your concerns about your upcoming rental, feel free to contact us with any further questions you may have."
Haven't actually booked anything as yet, but having it in writing makes me feel better
Thanks again everyone"
